Venus encouraged Serena to return at Indian Wells Masters.

Serena said, “If she didn’t support me, I wouldn’t be here. If she said, ‘Serena, I don’t think this is good, I don’t think you should go,’ there’s no chance I would be here right now.  She 100 percent supports me and is happy that I’m here, and even encouraged me to come.”

“I think there will be added nerves. I would not be telling the truth if I said that there wasn’t. To be honest, I was a little nervous to come out here. In the beginning I was like, ‘What was I thinking?’ I had to overcome that hurdle.”

World no.1 player Serena Williams also mentioned that meeting with Nelson Mandela and after reading his biography she gets so much inspiration and motivation. Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) also helped her to get out the problems she was facing.

Serena said, “I think a lot of the things that have been happening lately did have a part in the whole picture. It wasn’t one thing or two things. It was a lot of stuff. I thought it was good timing, not just for me, but for Americans in general to step up and say we as a people, we as Americans, we can do better, we can be better and we are better.”

“In terms of EJI, I had an opportunity to get to know Byron Stevenson and the work he’s been doing in terms of Equal Justice Initiative, and getting the right representation for many, many minorities for the prison system. I thought it was a perfect opportunity and a perfect place to spread the word and to try and help others,” she added.
