World Rugby has declared the list of match officials for the upcoming world cup 2019 in Japan. Welsh rugby union referee Nigel Owens who officiated 2015 RWC final, will be the main refereeing the opening match of this year’s championship between Japan and Russia at Tokyo Stadium on 20th September.
Proudly Welsh’s Nigel Owens and England’s Wayne Barnes will be officiating Rugby World Cup for the fourth time in their careers. Meanwhile it will be mater of pride for South African referee Jaco Peyper who will be standing in his 50th international match on 5th October when Japan to play Samoa.

The match referees announced today will be officiating the pool stage matches in the tournament. Governing council will name the officials for knockout games later to the competition. At least three group matches have been allotted to all match officials with games are scheduled to play across 12 venues in the country.

Japan is hosting the Rugby World Cup for the first time and eventually it is Asia’s maiden occasion when a world cup will take place in the continent. Hence World Rugby match officials selection committee chairman Anthony Buchanan hailed the delight of competition and appointments of the referees.
“We are building strong momentum towards Rugby World Cup 2019 and I am delighted to say that there is a very strong team ethic across the match officials group, a superb culture and a determination to perform at their best at Asia’s first Rugby World Cup,” Buchanan said.
RWC 2019 is the ninth edition of Rugby World Cup and it will be contested between 20 September and 2 November among 20 teams.
