World Champion Serena Williams is set to face Russia’s no.1 player Maria Sharapova in the quarter-final match of 2016 Australian open. Serena took just 55 minutes to beat Margarita Gasparyan and storm into Australian open quarter-final for the 10th time with 6-2, 6-1 score. On the other hand world no. 5 Maria defeated Belinda Bencic by 7-5, 7-5 to enter in the final-8.

It will be an interesting battle to watch out for as Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova faced each other in 2015 Australian open final in which USA champ defeated Maria to claim her 19th title. Sharapova won her last Aus open back in 2008 and since then she is looking for the win in first grand slam of the year.

Maria Sharapova defeated Serena Williams twice in 2004 year and since then she has been awaiting for the win against queen of tennis court. Williams won 18 straight matches after that defeat in 2004. Serena said on the quarterfinal match against Sharapova that it would be a great match and she would love to win that. She is hoping a good match against Russian beauty.

She said, “It’ll be a good match, she [Sharapova] played a good game today. We’ll have fun. She always brings in something new and something special. She’s very consistent, as well … one player that’s always consistently winning and training hard and working hard and winning matches.”

Serena Williams has won 21 Grand Slams in career already and will be looking to start the season with a big win. It will be a big match for Sharapova as she is returning from the shoulder injury and trying to find her tune in the beginning of 2016 season.
