Ireland cricket CEO Warren Deutrom has urged International Cricket Council (ICC) to enhance the number of teams participating in ODI world cup. In a latest interview to cricketnext, Deutrom said that it’s not a good idea to have 10-team 50 over world cup when you have 12 full members at the board.

“I strongly believe that the 50 over World Cup has too few teams. We have 12 full members and we have 10 teams in the 50 over the World Cup. Somehow it doesn’t seem right to me that we have more teams capable of playing the five day game than are worthy of being on the 50 over showcase,” Warren Deutrom said in a statement.

Ireland to play England after COVID-19 pandemic as both teams to meet in the first match of ICC ODI super league that will determine teams for 2023 world cup in India. Hence Warren said that associate teams have done well in the past and they’re capable of doing in future as well.

It will be injustice for associate boards if they get play 50-over format matches for the world cup and don’t see them at main tournament. According to Ireland cricket CEO, it would be beneficial for them to play and focus more on twenty20 cricket as it gives them a chance to compete in ICC T20 World Cup in which 16 teams take participation in the main event.

“I don’t think there is any incentive now for associate teams to even want to play 50 over cricket. I think they’re now going to prefer 20 over cricket, simply because there’s no chance now for those teams to participate in the World Cup. If they can’t get to the World Cup, then what is the point of playing it? It is too lengthy a format, and it’s expensive,” he added.

Pakistan were beaten by Ireland in 2007 cricket world cup played in West Indies. And then Irish side defeated England in 2011 world cup event. So Warren said that these are enough evidences to prove that associate sides can also win against top cricketing national sides.

“We think about Ireland’s performances in the 2007 World Cup beating Pakistan as similar to Zimbabwe beating Bangladesh. We think about that famous victory against England in 2011. This is evidence of associate teams being able to compete on the world stage. Think about what Afghanistan achieved when it was an associate member as well.”

Chief also urged ICC to make changes from the upcoming 2023 world cup where 10 teams will be playing in the event. According to him, cricket’s biggest governing body must increase the number of teams from 13th edition of ICC world cup.

“I think this is something which is desperately short sighted, and I think is something which needs to be changed as quickly as possible, preferably in time for the 2023 World Cup,” CEO quoted.
