Former Australian cricketer and commentator Dean Jones has said that cricketing career of Mahendra Singh Dhoni would be over if he doesn’t play good in the upcoming IPL 2020 season. As per Jones’ latest interview to Times of India, he rated MSD high but making international comeback wouldn’t be easy if he fails to perform.

“If Dhoni has a wonderful IPL then he’s away, but if he doesn’t do well in the next IPL then perhaps his door is definitely shut. But, he’s left the door open. This break might be fantastic for him,” Dean Jones told TOI.

It is difficult for players to return on the field after a long time, especially when you get old. Dhoni hasn’t played since 2019 world cup semi-final against New Zealand in July. So it’s been more than a year since he played international game.

“He has had a really good break and if he wants to come back out of this — trust me as you get older it gets more difficult to come back from a break.”

Though 59-year old Jones cited Dhoni as superstar and great player. But he’s said that national team has changed their way of thinking and now they’re relying on other players like RIshabha Pant and KL Rahul who are doing wicket-keeping for quite sometime.

“He [Dhoni] is an absolute superstar. He is a ‘great’. So, I have always felt, with the greats, to tend to let them do what they want to do, but at the moment they are leaning towards KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant.
