The second day of Australian Open 2016 made tennis fans quite disappointed as some of the big names in tennis world, forced to pack their bags by qualifier players in the competition. The biggest name who got early exit in the 104th Aus Open was Spanish player Rafael Nadal. He lost first round match of tournament against home mate Fernando Verdasco.
Spain’s Fernando Verdasco beat former world no 1 player Nadal in 5 sets by 7-6(8-6), 4-6, 3-6, 7-6(7-4), 6-2 score to make history for Nadal as this is the first ever occasion in Australian Open when Rafael Nadal failed to qualify for second round. After winning the match, Verdacso said that he was surprised with results but yeah his hard working was paying off against big players like Nadal.
Verdasco said, “I just started hitting winners. I didn’t know how. I was just closing the eyes & everything was going in. I will keep it up and try to keep playing like this. Now I focus on the second round. Let’s go.”
Playing his last Australian Open, tennis professional from Australia Lleyton Hewitt defeated James Duckworth in a emotional first round match. He won it by 7-6(7-5), 6-2, 6-4 to enter in the second round.
After the match Hewitt said, “It was a tough situation. To try and block it all out. I tried to stay in the moment as much as possible. I’m really proud the family can enjoy this. It’s emotional, we’re trying to enjoy it as much as possible.”

The other big setback of today’s Australian Day was in women’s singles event. The second seed player Simona Halep was beaten by China’s qualifier player Shuai Zhang in straight sets by 6-4, 6-3. Zhang was so emotional after winning the match even she couldn’t control herself and cried on the court as she defeated no. 2 player in the world.
Zhang said, “I play really well today. I feeling no more nervous, because nothing to lose. Beating a top two player … I’m so excited. So happy. Today is the best moment of my career. Li Na is a great player and gave me a lot of help so thank you to her. Yesterday I saw her. She’s always helping the young players.”
On the beginning of day-2 in Australian Open, seed 8 player Venus Williams was defeated by Johanna Konta in first round match. It was really a shock defeat for Venus in straight sets by 6-4, 6-2 to get out of the competition.
In other matches of second day in Australian Open 2016, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, David Ferrer, Bernard Tomic, John Isner, Jeremy Chardy, Ana Ivanovic, Victoria Azarenka, Timea Bacsinszky, Ekaterina Makarova and Garbine Muguruza won their respective first round matches to qualify in the second round of competition.
